Note: It is
with great pleasure to have accepted the contract to handle part two of the
Burbridge Foundation Collection (the first having been held at Sotheby’s, NYC
in the fall of 1996, shortly after the death of Robert Burbridge in 1994). This
collection demonstrates the keen eye of Robert Burbridge, who began scouring
the country for antiques in the 1950’s. On a wintry mid-western evening in 2017
I was astonished to see what Burbridge had amassed in his 15,000 sq ft
warehouse. Scores of paintings, rows of bronzes, marble and sculptures.
Exploring with a flashlight I rediscovered one remarkable object after another.
Ranging from an Indian motorcycle, a statue of Dionysus, a Clymer printing
press, chandeliers, Russian art, and more. It was a delight to explore. For the
convenience of the sale the collection was shipped in 3 moving trucks to our
gallery. I invite you to discover for yourself this collection which has been
in storage for over 25 years.
Robert
Oscar Burbridge (1907-1994): Among
Mr. Burbridge's many successes was the "Tamperpruf" Badge System used
all over the world from World War II through the Korean War for government
security and identification, including Cape Kennedy. In addition, Mr. Burbridge
cornered the market on the manufacture of security decals during the 1940's and
over the decades expanded into decals for parking at universities and other
institutions. |
